Dental checkups are just as important for infants and children as they are for adults. We recommend having your child’s first dental checkup around their first birthday, as good oral hygiene is important at any age! We understand that this may be uncomfortable for both parents and children alike, and we encourage parents to have a positive outlook on trips to the dentist, as this will rub off on the children!


We aim to make our pediatric patients comfortable during their visit, just as we do with all our patients!

Here are some helpful hints on how to make your first visit easier:

Take another adult along for the visit – Having someone else there with them to soothe them while they are having their mouth examined helps immensely! They will be more comfortable around someone they know and love.

Leave other children at home – Other children can distract both the parent and the pediatric patient, which can alleviate a lot of stress and fussing!

Use positive language – Avoid using scary dental terms like “drills” or “needles” when speaking to your child about the dentist. If they have a positive outlook coming in, their appointment will be much more enjoyable for everyone. In addition, using positive language about the treatment such as “keeping the teeth healthy and happy” will help them see the positive side of dentistry.

Explain what will happen – Being open and honest about what will happen to them during their dental visit will help them be ready for it. There are several children’s books that can help prepare your child for the dentist.


Good oral hygiene is always the best way to prevent cavities! This includes regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups.

Here are some helpful tips on how to avoid cavities:

  • Brush and floss – Brushing and flossing regularly will help keep their teeth healthy now, and will also start good habits for a lifetime of healthy teeth!
  • Avoid sticky foods – Sticky foods are more difficult to remove properly with brushing and flossing
  • Watch what they eat – Sugary and starchy snacks can expedite the formation of cavities. Replacing things like candy to natural foods like fruit or cheese and soda to water is a great start! It is also always better to drink while eating to flush out food particles
  • Lose the sippy cup – Especially if they contain sugary drinks. This increases exposure time of sugar to the teeth.
  • Rinse the pacifier – Pacifiers can hold on to oral bacteria, so it is important to rinse them frequently
  • Maintain regular dental appointments – Regular cleanings and dental checkups are essential for a person at any age to maintain good oral health.
